The refund (or reduction in tax payable) depends only on the amount donated and not on taxable income. One only needs to file a tax return in order to receive it. The 2008 tax credit formula is:

• for contributions between 0 and $400, you will get back 75%;
• for contributions between $400 and $750, you will get back $300 plus 50% of the amount over $400;
• for contributions over $750, you will get back $475 plus 33 1/3% of the amount over $750 up to a maximum of $1100 annually.
